Powters History
Powters is one of Newmarket’s oldest established family businesses, dating back to 1880.
The origin of the Newmarket Sausage dates back to this time when Grant Powter’s great grandfather set up his first butchers shop in Wellington Street.
By the early 20th Century the sausage was being taken home as a souvenir by visitors to the Newmarket races. From these beginnings, Powters Celebrated Newmarket Sausage continued to expand in popularity, even in war years, when many other meats were rationed. In these days queues would regularly form outside the little shop when rumours of a meat delivery promised that more of the celebrated bangers would shortly be on sale! Ever since 1952 they have been given as a traditional prize by Powters to the winning jockeys of the country’s oldest horse race, the Newmarket Town Plate, started by King Charles 11 in 1665 and now sponsored by Powters.
Powters still make their famous Newmarket Sausage to the original recipe, combining fresh, hand boned free range local pork with a secret blend of herbs and spices to give a unique and distinctive taste which has stood the test of time!
