'View the Production Process'

Grant Powter's great grandfather first opened his butchers shop in Newmarkets Wellington Street in the 1880's and the retail business is still situated in the street four generations later.

Powters is nationally famous for its 'Celebrated Newmarket Sausage' which is still made to the original family recipe dating back to the 1880's. A unique blend of herbs and spices, together with fresh, hand-boned pork and the use of only the finest quality ingredients give these sausages a truly distinctive flavour, making them 'The Connoisseurs Choice' among superior sausages.

These sausages are free from artificial colours and flavours and have a high lean meat content.

Powters Newmarket Sausage wins national acclaim in The Daily Telegraph's 'Taste of Britain' Awards 2005 (announced 4 March 2006). Powters Newmarket Sausage was successful in these new awards which were jointly sponsored by Sainsbury's. All the categories were hotly contested, with speciality and regional food and drink from all over the U.K. The judges were impressed by the outstanding quality and diversity of the entries and commented that 'quality shines through'.

Powters Celebrated Newmarket Sausage was voted 'Britain's Best Sausage 2003' at the Meat and Poultry News Industry Awards held at London's Park Lane Hotel on December 3 2003.

Powters Newmarket Sausages have also received gold medals from the Guild of Q Butchers and in the MLC's Regional Excellence Awards 2002.

Our sausages have been recommended by celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson in BBC Good Food Magazine. They also featured on Anglia TV's Out to Lunch with Brian Turner and on Channel 4 Racing with John McCrirrick and Derek Thompson.

Powters shop is situated in Newmarket's Wellington Street, just off the busy High Street, at one corner of the town's market square car park. It has many delights for the foodie, including sausages galore in several varieties.

All beef sold in the shop is certified Aberdeen Angus, which is dry-aged for 28 days to give tenderness, succulence and flavour. Lamb from Romney Marsh and prized pedigree Gloucestershire Old Spots pork, our speciality, is accredited by Traditional Breeds Meat Marketing. This pork is the ultimate for flavour and superb crackling. It is non-intensively reared on small, local farms where the animals' welfare is a priority. Because this breed grows more slowly than modern commercial breeds, the meat develops a more distinctive taste recognised by leading chefs.

A tempting range of innovative oven-ready meals, all made freshly with quality ingredients and lean cuts is always available in this oasis of traditional butchery skills. Our delecatessen offers an extensive choice of British and continental cooked meats, cheeses and hams.

Our membership of the Guild Of Q Butchers, the best butchers in the country, means that visitors to Powters can be sure of friendly, knowledgable staff, personal service as well as quality and hygiene which are second to none.
